Baba giving Android gyan: mophie Charge Force gives the Galaxy S7 a magnetic personality

mophie-charge-force-wireless-cases-ac-10

When mophie revealed the juice pack for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge last February, it came with a rather puzzling feature. It boasted of wireless charging capabilities that Samsung's flagships already had on their own. While the case did give the smartphone an added battery boost, it might not have offered much else for that added bulk. Today, however, mophie is introducing a matching accessory that does give that case one more ability. With the Charge Force desk mount and vent mounts, not only will you be able to wirelessly charge your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, you can securely mount it on your desk or car without clamps or wires as well.

The fact that the mophie juice pack for the Galaxy S7 had wireless charging of its own, compatible with the Qi standard that Samsung also uses, is probably more of a safety net. With a rather bulky case like the juice pack, the smartphone's built-in wireless charging is likely not to work because of the added distance between charging coil in the phone and the charging pad.

With Charge Force, mophie adds a new dimension to wireless charging. Using very strong magnets, you can have that same neat look while charging your smartphone even as your device hangs vertically over your desk or in your car. The magnets also ensure that you've properly connected your smartphone to the charging pad. So that two features for the price of one!

Wireless charging is, admittedly, still not the go to solution for charging, despite the convenience of freedom from wires. That might continue to be the case until wireless charging technology has caught up with the power and rate offered by wired solutions. The arrival of USB C might also delay adoption a wee bit, as accessory makers like mophie start the work to support this new standard.

Baba giving Android gyan: ASUS VR Headset spotted with leather straps, could be a prototype

ASUS VR Headset

ASUS did surprise us when it introduced the Zenbo. The smart little companion is a home robot that functions as a smart home controller, virtual assistant, reminder, or a digital nanny. The Taiwanese tech giant still has a lot in store for the digital and mobile consumers. We’re guessing a VR headset but ASUS didn’t say much about this wearable device.

We just know it’s not a standalone VR headset like the Oculus but more similar to a Samsung Gear VR that needs a Galaxy smartphone. For this ASUS VR headset, obviously it will have to work with the latest ZenFones. There seems to be buttons and a touchpad on this unannounced virtual reality device.

We’re still not sure if the company will be showing off more of the gadget in Taiwan but we’re just delighted to know more OEMs are venturing in this arena. ASUS’ VR headset has a lot of potential. We believe so, because the Zenbo is one cool and cute home robot.

We may only be looking at a prototype so it's not yet ready to be demoed in front of the many eager Computex goers but we're hoping at the next biggest consumer tech event which is IFA in September. Let's just wait and see.

Baba giving Android gyan: Microsoft working on FlashBack to deliver high-quality VR

Samsung Gear VR Microsoft Oculus

The year 2016 is when virtual reality will finally take its flight. We've seen a few VR headsets already but the industry has yet to become more common. The smartwatch is already in that level after a couple of years. As for VR, it may take less time because companies are improving on the parts and components more quickly than ever. We've lost count of how many VR devices we've seen and tried but we know each device still needs to be improved. We just know they need more powerful graphics card to play high-resolution images.

Of all the VR headsets available, there's the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift offering high-res and high-fidelity experience. However, they still need to be connected to a computer which needs to be very powerful. They are also very expensive just like the other VRs available in the market. There are cheaper ones ready but they still need smartphones to work as the display screen. You can practically have one for free with the Google Cardboard although resolution isn't as impressive.

The VR industry still has more room for improvements but progress is still a bit slow. Good things there's the Microsoft Research for working on enhancements such as the FlashBack. It's a new system that boasts of better framerate (8X) and latency reduction (15X), and less energy consumption (97X). Flashback is considered as a new algorithmic approach for high-quality VR environments. What it does is to reduce rendering of real-time frames for the virtual realm. The result is no need for GPU.

This system allows pre-rendering of images for even those in high-res or mega-frames to be displayed smoothly. Other special features of Flashback also include compression and storage of mega-frames in the RAM or SSD or even those in a larger VR environment. The key here is to compress files right on the flash storage and then allow a VR app to be pre-loaded on a smartphone or VR frame.

Demos were made on the Oculus Rift DK2 headset and the HP Pavilion Mini recently. The technology is still in its initial stages so don't expect too much. FlashBack still needs to be developed and tested fully because it can be used commercially.

Baba giving Android gyan: Tiny Towers now back on Google Play Store under new listing

tiny towers

Five years ago, when Tiny Towers first made its way into our smartphones, we could not stop letting these pixelated little characters into various buildings. But for some reason, it was published under the Mobage gaming network instead of by developer NimbleBit. So when Mobage stopped supporting several games in 2015, Tiny Tower was included. Now a year later, and to celebrate the game’s 5th birthday, it’s back on the Google Play Store under a different listing, this time by its own developer already.

The gameplay basically remains the same. You need to let in and look after all these various characters into a tower that keeps getting higher and higher, and you need to make sure you’re earning money from your tenants and customers in order to continue building more floors. But of course there are some new features in the game, including new floors, costumes, lobbies, roofs, elevators, and even more missions to get more money. Ah, capitalism at its finest!

Managing your tower and the people in it is also now easier with new QuickStock features. You can also now trade bitizens with your friends. Okay, it sounds like human trafficking, but hey, it’s a digital world, so it’s legal. You can also now rename your bitizens, so if you hate the name Harry and he has been given to you, you can now rename him Niall.

You can now download Tiny Tower once again, still for free, from the Google Play Store. There are still in-app purchases available, if you want to progress faster and you don’t mind spending actual money.

Baba giving Android gyan: Oppo to bring FC Barcelona-themed F1 Plus smartphone

oppo-f1-plus-fcb

The European club football season is officially over, and if you’re going into withdrawals and you’re a massive FC Barcelona fan, then you’ll be happy to know that Oppo can somehow help you with that. They will be releasing a limited edition F1 Plus smartphone that pays tribute to the Spanish La Liga champions and will even release a case with the laser-printed signatures of the club’s biggest players, including Lionel Messi, Luiz Suarez, and Neymar.

The F1 Plus, which positions itself as a selfie-centric device, will be coming out with a limited edition version, with red-and-blue (Blaugrana, as it refers to the club colors) color scheme and an 18K gold-plated club insignia at the back cover. The default wallpaper of course is all about the Catalan club which won both the league and the cup this season. It will also have a case that will feature the signatures of players like the aforementioned big 3, the MSN (Messi, Suarez, Neymar), plus Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta.

f1-plus-fcb-case

Barca goodies aside, the F1 Plus seems like a pretty solid high-end device, with its 5.5-inch FHD display, powered by a 2GHz MediaTek Helio P10 SoC. It has 4GB RAM, 64GB of internal storage, and a 2850mAh battery. It is probably one of the few smartphones where the front-facing camera has more pixels than the main camera, as it has a 13MP shooter at the back and a 16MP camera at the front.

oppo-f1-plus-fcb-1

The FC Barcelona F1 Plus will be available by mid-June in China, Singapore, and Indonesia, plus other select markets, where the club is probably more popular. There are no pricing details yet, but all will be revealed soon.

Baba giving Android gyan: Sync for reddit updated with Android M permissions, Material Design changes

SYNC for reddit

We're always excited about updates on apps for reddit including the Sync for reddit. There may be similar apps but this Sync has just received perhaps the biggest update yet. Expect to see a number of new features including new Material Design animations and transitions, automatic comment caching, automative subreddit theming, full height images, inline link previews, and a quick toggle night mode among others. Since the Android M Developer Preview is already out, the devs have also added permissions for the platform.

Baba giving Android gyan: ZTE to open 23 flagship stores across China, Mexico, Germany, and Russia

ZTE

ZTE may not be the top Chinese OEM in the mobile industry today but it’s probably one of the more popular brands. It’s certainly one of the biggest in the United States with ZTE USA as the No. 2 in prepaid phones. It is considered the second biggest manufacturer of networking gear and the second largest in the world as per IDC data. It will only continue to grow especially that it’s already planning to open 23 flagship stores.

Twenty stores will be opening in several cities in China and the remaining three will be opened in Mexico, Russia, and Germany.

ZTE’s target sales for this year has increased from last year’s 56 million units of smartphones. This 2016, the company is hoping to sell 70 million phones. CEO Zeng said that these flagship stores will help “lift brand awareness while spurring sales in the areas we value the most”. Numbers may be far from the what Apple and Samsung currently have but ZTE is moving up. It may not reach Huawei yet but it’s definitely getting there.

This move is to obviously bring in more sales in the mobile and consumer devices category. ZTE CEO Adam Zeng shared the good news. This is not an unusual strategy but is actually similar to what Apple has been doing—opening stores in iconic locations all over the world. Apple has been successful selling more iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers every where a new store is opened. ZTE wants to copy and is hopeful that they will be able to sell millions.

Baba giving Android gyan: Samsung to reportedly launch Mini Pay app for online transactions

samsung-1-980x420

While Samsung Pay is still trying to establish itself in the midst of stiff competition from Android Pay and Apple Pay, rumors of a secondary product are already making the rounds. Sources are saying the OEM will be launching a new app called Samsung Mini Pay so that non-Samsung users will be able to use it for their online transactions. This is a result of a survey showing that Samsung Pay itself is used more for physical transactions even though it can be used online as well.

The sources are saying that the move to create a Samsung Mini Pay is to “strengthen online payments” although how it will do that exactly isn’t stated yet in the leaked news items. They are saying however that some companies have already committed to supporting this new product, including Hana Card and Lotte Card, two of the biggest cards in South Korea.

Less than 20% of the payments made through Samsung Pay are online, even though it can actually be used both offline and online. One of the reasons is that the process is a bit more complicated than the usual credit card transactions. The Samsung Pay Mini will reportedly be simpler and will also allow other Android users, not just those with compatible Samsung devices, to be able to use the mobile payment gateway, at least online.

Even though there are no details yet, the rumored app will use fingerprint authentication for those with biometric features. But for those without, then a password/ID combo will supposedly be used. We don’t know yet of course how this will differ from just the straight up credit card payments and if it will even make it out of South Korea.

Baba giving Android gyan: Samsung brings updates to Game Launcher, Game Tools, Good Lock apps

650_1200

These new Samsung apps, Game Launcher, Game Tools, Good Lock, were introduced alongside the new flagship devices, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge but those with older devices will be able to use them as well, if they’re on Android 6.0 Marshmallow already (well, at least the third app). Now the OEM is bringing all of them some significant updates, and it looks like they’re listening to their existing users as some of their suggestions are being applied to the apps.

The Game Launcher and Game Tools were introduced in the TouchWiz version of the new devices and work together to give you a better gaming experience on your mobile device. The Game Launcher puts all of your games together in one folder. It brings you a Do Not Disturb mode so your other notifications or activities won’t bother you when you’re playing and also helps you save on power through some settings control. The update brings an enhanced DND mode so you can control the notifications better.

The Game Tool meanwhile is a floating button that you can see on your game screen so you can start recording your game if you’re on a roll or block notifications, or take a screenshot or lock the recent and back keys so you won’t accidentally click them. For this update, your floating button will now become invisible if you’re recording and has wider blocking coverage if you’re on “no alerts during gameplay” mode. Both the Game Launchr and Game Tools now have a help section, with FAQs and a customer service contact form. The recording limit has also been upgraded to 4GB compared to the 40 minute limit previous limit.

Samsung-Game-Tools-menu

Lastly, the well-received Good Lock app, which overhauled the UI of the TouchWiz, has added even more suggestions from actual users. Some of the new features include support for unlocking by Google Voice, shows more notifications on the locked screen if there is no content on the App Tray, adding a Mobile Hotspot button in the Quick Panel, adding Smart Lock in there as well, and a whole lot of other community suggestions. You can update your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge or your Marshmallow-enabled device to enjoy and update the Good Lock app.

Baba giving Android gyan: ARM intros new mobile tech products for better AR, VR experiences

ARM processor

ARM is one busy company. There's no stopping the brand for coming up with new premium mobile technologies. One of its many goals is to come up with an IP suite that will make significant changes to the augmented reality and virtual reality world. AR and VR are still in their early stages but they are expected to be well-integrated on flagship devices next year. The latest processors, the ARM Mali G71 and ARM Cortex A73, both promise impressive efficiency and advanced performance.

The graphics processor takes advantage of the new Bifrost architecture. The two are actually optimized for the 10nm FinFET process technology. They are aimed to offer enhanced visual and contextual capabilities for future mobile devices as such will allow longer battery life and high resolution content. You see, the smartphones aren't going anywhere. They will only improve and totally bring mobile computing to a whole new level. It may even beat notebook computers someday.

Each generation of smartphones become more impressive than ever. The two new processors are different in such a way that they are really better with 4K video playback, augmented reality, and virtual reality. For one, the Mali-G71 GPU delivers better graphics performance by 50 percent, 40 percent more per mm2, 20 percent better in power efficiency. This means mid-range laptops will have a boost in performance.

Meanwhile, the ARM Cortex A73 mobile processor is described as the most efficient ARMv8-A core so far, promising a 30 perfect boost in power efficiency and performance. The likes of Mediatek, Marvell, and HiSilicon have already licensed the technology for their future products. The newest ARM IP suite is expected to improve performance density required for other devices like smart TVs, vehicle infotainments, industrial gateways, and tablets.

Baba giving Android gyan: Qualcomm announces Snapdragon Wear 1100 chipset for targeted purposes

Snapdragon Wear 1100

Back in February, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon Wear 2100 to replace the Snapdragon 400. The latter was the more common chip used in smartwatches but the S2100 will now have a follow-up in the form of the Snapdragon Wear 1100 processor. The wearable industry is a growing market as even the kids and the elderly are getting their own. The standard smartwatches and fitness trackers are being improved every generation and with this new processor, expect faster and more efficient wearables.

Qualcomm Technologies International's SVP and GM Anthony Murray is happy about the addition of the Snapdragon Wear 1100 to the Snapdragon Wear line. Targeted use includes elderly or child tracking. Murray said, "We are actively working with the broader ecosystem to accelerate wearables innovation and are excited to announce a series of customer collaborations today."

Special features also include integrated applications processor for Linux, WiFi, Bluetooth, and voice, as well as, the Qualcomm iZat integrated location engine. The last feature allows cell-ID positioning, multi-GNSS, and geo-fencing.

The Snapdragon Wear 1100 processor is ideal for wearables with more targeted purposes. It's great for OEMs who want to release smaller smartwatches but with faster performance, more powerful battery, secured location, and smarter sensing. With the new chipset, any wearable device can meet low power specs and features. The new processor also works with Cat 1 modem with LTE/3G global band and Power Save Mode (PSM).

Baba giving Android gyan: Pump Express 3.0 battery charging tech charges to 70% in 20 minutes

mediatek

Still a huge problem for a lot of mobile users is the fact that the more high tech their phone becomes and the more features the OEMs bring, the faster our batteries drain. They still haven’t figured out the formula to crack that code. But MediaTek is claiming that they might have a sort of solution in its new product, the Pump Express 3.0. It is a battery charging tech that will power your smartphone up to 70% in just around 20 minutes.

This is MediaTek’s fastest battery charing technology so far and claims that you can “charge for five minutes and talk for four hours,” but of course these numbers depend on other conditions like dark screen, modem on/off, etc. But it says it is twice as fast as any existing solutions in the market today and five times faster than conventional charging. So if you’re in a hurry and you need to quickly give your device a boost, the Pump Express 3.0 tech should be able to help you there.

Aside from the charging speed, it says it has only managed to reduce the overheating while charging factor. That’s because they’ve routed the electrical current from the adaptor directly to the battery and it won’t pass anymore through your device’s charging circuitry which is where the overheating usually happens. Called direct charging, they are the first to enable this through usb-type-c power delivery.

The MediaTek Pump Express 3.0 will be included in the Helio series P20, expected to be available by the end of 2016. If your future smartphone will use MediaTek’s SoC’s, you can also request to have the tech added.

Baba giving Android gyan: Samsung Pay partners with Citibank ahead of Singapore launch

Samsung-Pay_S7-edge_706

Samsung Pay is set to make its debut in other countries aside from South Korea and the US later this year. They would need to as they are already behind their competitors like Apple Pay and Android Pay. But for now, the Korean OEM is launching the beta program in Singapore and they have already finalized a partnership with Citibank so that when they fully launch by next month, users with supported Samsung devices and who are customers of the bank will be able to enjoy the mobile payment gateway.

Samsung Pay is set to launch in the Southeast Asian country at the end of the 2nd quarter of this year. Given that’s next month already, they probably need to work double time on this. But the Citibank partnership is one step towards it, as the customers will have the option to use their compatible mobile devices to make payments at restaurants and commercial establishments. Citibank has a huge customer base and merchant network in Singapore, not to mention that this is a country with a huge digital-savvy demographic.

To test out all these things that are being set up, Samsung has invited selected mobile users to be part of their Samsung Pay beta testing. Thousands signed up to participate, and they will eventually be notified when the test program will actually start. If you do live in Singapore and wanted to participate, sorry, but the registration is now closed and you’d have to wait for the actual Samsung Pay to go live soon.

Compatible mobile devices available in Singapore are the Galaxy Note 5 4G+, S6 edge+ 4G+, S7 4G+ and S7 edge 4G+. You will be able to use Samsung Pay in any place where debit and credit cards are available. So far, Citibank is the only financial institution in Singapore that has made a deal with Samsung.

Baba giving Android gyan: ASUS intros Zenbo home robot, your new smart little companion

ASUS Zenbo

ASUS' latest creation surprised as a bit at the Zenvolution. We were expecting a new notebook but the Taiwanese tech giant released something different: a robot. It's not really a new thing but a home robot is not yet a standard. With the launch of the Zenbo, we can can expect that the horizon will change and make robots more common. We're guessing that after ASUS, more companies will follow suit.

The Zenbo used to be a dream for ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih. It has become a reality, hoping to give a headstart to the robotic computing technology for the home. There's the Amazon Echo and Google Home already but the two look boring compared to the Zenbo. The latter was designed to look like a real robot. It will kinda remind you of BB-8 as it can "walk" on its own. It won't roll but its body looks like BB-8's. So yeah, with Zenbo, you'll have your own R2-D2 or BB-8, only this one can do more expect for shoot the enemies.

Zenbo can do a lot of things. It can offer assistance, companionship, information, and entertaining. You only need one Zenbo per household and it can store data about each family member. The home robot is exactly what we imagine one will be although there may still be limits. It's best for those with senior family members as Zenbo will remind them to take their meds and take care of their health. It will also help them get connected with family. If there's a minor accident at home, Zenbo will notify a family member.

Zenbo can help you finish a number of simple tasks like email, social media, video calls, watching TV shows or movies, or shopping. You don't have to type because voice commands will be enough. For the parents, Zenbo can be your child's bestfriend. It may never replace a pet but your kid will be entertained with interactive games and stories. Zenbo can share a lot of stories from its built-in library. Zenbo will entertain like a real storyteller with different voices, images, and even room lighting.

The ASUS Zenbo can also work as a smart home controller. It can integrate with other smart home devices like TVs, lights, or air conditioners. It can work as a digital cookbook, reminder, calendar, or nanny. It can also function as a security camera when you're away from home.

ASUS Zenbo FeaturesThese are just some of the many things Zenbo can do. With the Zenbo Developer Program, we're sure developers will be able to make more exciting features. We'll see where the Zenbo SDK will take this home robot. Still no word on pricing and availability but we're crossing our fingers this smart little companion from ASUS will set a precedent for other OEMs to make their own and finally start the era of home robots.

Baba giving Android gyan: OnePlus opens The Lab as OnePlus 3 Peer Review Program

OnePlus LAB

OnePlus has yet to launch the OnePlus 3 but the Chinese company is already launching The Lab. This is an effort to get help from the whole OnePlus community to give feedback on the upcoming new smartphone. OnePlus is still relatively a young company but it's doing all its best to get its game on. So far, so good on year 3 of launching flagship phones. The next one is scheduled to be announced this June via a VR launch just like last year. Crowd-sourced ideas and comments are expected to help the brand deliver a product that is world-class.

Those who will sign up for The Lab aka the fans and users of OnePlus will be able to test and review a OnePlus 3. Each one will receive a new unit to use as a trial. As part of the review team, you will test the product and do a more in-depth analysis and look at the features. A comprehensive review will be required from the 30 people who will be chosen.

Just because you sign up, it doesn't mean you will automatically get the the smartphone. OnePlus will be selecting the reviewers. We don't know the criteria for selection or if it will be a random call.

Anyone can join but you need to submit a 500-word essay as part of the application process. That may be a challenge for some people but believe it or not, over 6,400 have already applied for this review program. Application will be closed in five days so you still have time to register. We don't know if you can keep the smartphone after the review but I think OnePlus will be generous enough to let you. We'll see.

Baba giving Android gyan: HTC One M9+ Prime Camera Edition now official, probably first out in India

In one of the weirder moves in the already uncommon strategies of the HTC smartphone brand, they launched a rehash of their 2015 flagship in Europe early this month called the HTC One M9 Prime Camera Edition. As the name boasts, the new smartphone actually improves on the old flagship in the camera department. But the strange strategies do not end there for HTC, as we are now alerted to the HTC One M9+ Prime Camera Edition going official in the Indian subcontinent.

As you may have guessed the “+” suffix in the HTC One M9+ Prime Camera Edition will mean that not only does this phone have a better camera from last year’s flagship, it will also have a slightly larger screen. Front and center is a 5.2-inch FullHD (1080p) display powered by a quite competent MediaTek Helio X10 chipset. The new phone is comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage, which is expandable via microSD. Powering all of these is a quite small-ish 2,840mAh battery.

The camera element of this new device should also be a highlight, if we were to take the name seriously. What you will get is a 13MP main shooter, quite possibly the same f/2.0 unit in the European variant, complete with optical image stabilization. There’s an UltraPixel selfie shooter carried over from the HTC One M9. Evidence points to Android 5.0 Lollipop as the operating system underneath the Sense UI.

The new phone is currently listed in HTC India’s web store with a price tag of around USD$355. It’s not available for purchase yet, although there are some reports that say it is already on sale with some third-party retailers in India.

Baba giving Android gyan: Google Photos celebrates first year, adding free original quality backup, other new features for Nexus phones

The Google Photos app/service began its life as a humble part of the Google+ social platform, but don’t look now, it’s actually celebrating its first year as a standalone cloud-based photo storage service. Google has some great numbers to look back on after a year of standalone existence, most notably 200 million users and counting. With this, Google plans to expand its feature in the upcoming v1.21 of Google Photos.

The Google Photos app/cloud-based service is not one of the flashiest apps Google has, but it certainly is effective. Google Photos was launched for both Android and iOS in May of last year, as well as getting a web version. In that time until these days, it has gotten a user base of 200 million, getting its first 100 million in a span of just 5 months. In total, Google Photos has freed up a whopping 13.7 petabytes (a petabyte is 1,000 terabytes) for free users.

And if you want to get excited for Google Photos these days, we have great news for you. A bunch of new features are coming to the app, starting from v1.21. At the top of this is an offer of free “original quality” backups of photos and videos for Nexus device users. Currently, pictures are resized to (a still very large) 16MP resolution if originals files exceed that. Now, Nexus device users will have unlimited free storage in original resolution, especially if your device takes pictures in larger than 16MP resolution.

Other new features will include new sorting methods for pictures within an album – options include newest first, oldest first, and recently added. You will also be getting new editing options for Google Photos, with Contrast and Exposure controls coming.
