It goes without saying that the second most populous nation in the world will also probably have the second most Internet users in the world. But despite having more than 100 million users across the nation, there are still more than a billion people in India that don’t have access to the Internet. Google has recently announced a new project with the Indian government to provide free public Wi-Fi across 400 stations in the country.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the US Google office and as part of his Digital India Initiative, the partnership was born. Not only is it free Internet, but it is high-speed Wi-Fi connection so that the more than 10 million who go through the train stations every day. They will be closely working with Indian Railways, the operator of the largest railway network in the country, as well as RailTel, which will provide the Internet through its extensive fiber network along the lines.
Google will also be doing other things in order to bring useful connectivity to Indian users. They started out with the launch of Android One last year, and they’re continuing this by launching a feature that loads webpages faster and consumes less data, and also making viewing YouTube videos available offline. Google Maps will also be coming offline soon. They are also incorporating more local language support in other Google products, like Hindi Voice Search, better Hindi keyboard support, and support for seven other Indian languages.
The free Internet will start with 100 stations at first and targeting it before 2016 ends, while the remaining stations will not be far behind. While it will be free, eventually the long-term goal is to make it sustainable so that they can further expand to other stations and other places as well.
